Illustrator CS5 is a vector-based drawing program that lets graphic designers create high-quality images for print, web, video, or mobile devices. Vector graphics are resolution independent, which means designers can shrink or enlarge a graphic and it will maintain its high quality.

Illustrator allows designers to create files with up to 100 different artboards of varying size. Artboards can be displayed onscreen as overlapping, side-by-side, or stacked.

Live Color allows users to interactively edit or replace colors. Live Paint can be used to paint closed or partially closed objects. New perspective tools allow users to draw shapes and scenes in accurate one-, two-, or three-point linear perspective to create the look of realistic depth and distance. Designers can convert photos, scans, or other bitmap images to Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) files with the Live Trace tool.

For artwork intended for mobile devices or the web, designers can align elements precisely on the file's pixel grid to create a sharper appearance. They can also use Illustrator to slice images, optimize GIF and JPEG artwork, export Flash (SWF) animations, and import or export SVG files.

The software includes prebuilt profiles that are tailored for outputs such as analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) television or Flash video.

Users can save multiple artboards as multipage PDF files and layered artwork as multilayer PDF files. They can create reliable, press-ready layouts using ISO-standard and ANSI-standard PDF/X.
