Software for Home Use

Software for Home Use

This page discusses the Software Assurance benefit Software for Home Use. Any employee that has a Microsoft Office suite on their work computer can get a copy for home use for the cost of media, shipping, and handling. These home-use copies are not volume licensing software. They have separate media and licensing. The employee can use the product while employed by the organization and must uninstall it when employment ends. (If Office 2003 products are needed, they are available through bulk order; see below.)

This benefit is available to any organization with a volume license agreement that has Software Assurance. It does not matter if some of the specific licenses within the agreement are more than two years old.

The organization must designate a Software Assurance Benefits Manager and give him or her the agreement license and authorization numbers from the TechSoup Stock fulfillment email or the TechSoup Stock Order Status page.

Bulk Ordering
Bulk ordering is available for home-use software and is generally the more cost-effective means. Organizations can order discs in lots of 20 or more for $8 a disc. To order, the Software Assurance Benefits Manager calls Microsoft Software Assurance Customer Service at (866) 230-0560. The manager must have the organization's agreement license number.

Individual Ordering
For organizations that do not order in bulk, discs can be obtained singly. Only Office 2007 and Office 2008 for Mac are available in this way. If Office 2003 products are needed, they are available through bulk ordering. The Software Assurance Benefits Manager uses the eOpen site as described in the section titled "Accessing Software Assurance Information and Benefits" of TechSoup Donation Recipients' Guide to the Microsoft eOpen Web Site (3.9-MB PDF). At step 5, the manager clicks the Home Use Program link to begin activating the benefit. The manager gets a program code from the eOpen Web site and gives the code to the interested employee.
