Digitize your contracts with DocuSign!

Exciting news — DocuSign, one of the world’s leading solutions for electronic signature technology, has joined TechSoup Canada as a donor partner!

DocuSign is a Digital Transaction Management (DTM) platform and eSignature solution, a category of cloud computing that helps you effectively manage approvals, decisions, contracts, and workflows electronically. ESignatures processed by DocuSign are in compliance with the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN Act) and Canada’s Uniform Electronic Commerce Act (UECA), so your nonprofit can rest assured that your contracts, agreements and general business documents are securely signed and facilitated.

DocuSign is offering a donated DocuSign Standard Edition (perpetual license) through TechSoup Canada. Please note that existing DocuSign customers are not eligible for this offer.

How does eSignature Legality work in Canada?

Did you know electronic signature has been recognized by law in Canada since 1999? The UECA allows electronic signatures to be admissible in the court of law regarding the formation of contracts for general business use, subject to proof.  ESignatures, as defined in the UECA, is “information in electronic form that a person creates or adopts in order to sign a document and that is attached to or associated with the document”. This means an eSignature can be a digitized image of a handwritten signature or a biometric signature such as a digitized thumbprint and/or voiceprint, and cannot be rejected simply because it is electronic.

While there are exceptions* for very specific types of transactions, eSignatures can be used to create valid contracts and general business documents, such as:

  • HR documents
  • Commercial agreements between corporate entities
  • Consumer agreements
  • Residential and commercial lease agreements
  • Service agreements
  • Software license agreements
  • Trademark licenses and certain other intellectual property licenses

Want to learn more? Visit DocuSign’s eSignature Legality Guide.

*Exceptions to when electronic signature solutions are not admissible include deeds and documents where parties need to satisfy additional/specific statutory form requirements, such as formal notarization before a public notary (i.e. wills, power of attorney directives, Quebec marriage contracts, etc). For a full list of eSignature use case exceptions, see DocuSign’s list of specific transaction types.

How can DocuSign benefit my organization?

You can use DocuSign to save time and money by digitizing formerly paper-based processes, like HR paperwork, volunteer waivers, and other contracts, and increase the flexibility of your staff by allowing documents to be signed anywhere and at any time.

The Special Olympics experienced first hand the benefits of minimizing the hassles of paperwork. In 2015, the Special Olympics started to use DocuSign for local, regional and world Special Olympics Games, allowing athletes, guardians, coaches, and doctors to electronically sign required documents, such as medical releases and participation forms.

With DocuSign, athletes, guardians, coaches, and doctors will be able to complete required health screenings digitally, without the need for paperwork

“Reducing barriers to entry is critical for Special Olympics and why we’re grateful to DocuSign for providing us with this capability,” said Janet Froetscher, CEO of Special Olympics. “We continuously look for ways to transform the way we serve our millions of athletes around the world. With DocuSign, athletes, guardians, coaches, and doctors will be able to complete required health screenings digitally, without the need for paperwork.”

How does DocuSign work?

  1. Upload your document
You can upload Microsoft Word documents, PDF, or other common document format from your computer or from another file-sharing sites, such as Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive.
  2. Indicate who needs to sign
Add the names and email addresses of your signers and other recipients. You can even specify the order in which they should sign!

  3. Place tags and send
Drag and drop DocuSign tags in areas where you need a signature, initial, date, or other custom fields, then click Send. DocuSign emails a link to each recipient which they can use to access the document. Signers do not need a DocuSign account to sign documents, and you and the signers can view, download, and print completed documents any time.

Once the document is complete, it’s stored securely for easy retrieval.
