9 Effective Apps to Help You Overcome Stress & Anxiety

According to Statistics Canada, 27% of working adults feel a lot of or an extreme amount of stress on a daily basis. Further, 62% of respondents reported that work was the main reason for their stress. While anxiety is present in every industry, nonprofit workers are especially vulnerable to stress.

The demands of the sector -- from providing beneficiaries with intensive social support to dealing with management challenges, precarious funding, and long hours -- all make nonprofit burnout a common experience.

The good news is that technology can make self-care easier. Here are 9 apps designed to help people check in and keep their stress to manageable levels. They are all free, with the exception of the last app listed Accupressure.

This popular app is well-loved for a good reason. It guides users through meditation and mindfulness practices, and includes an “SOS” function for panicky moments. If you upgrade to the paid version, you gain access to hundreds of guided meditations.

 2. Happify

 Happify is based on scientific insights into happiness. It suggests activities proven to improve mood, and teaches coping skills that empower users to cope with stress. The app is based around the S.T.A.G.E. model – Savor, Think, Aspire, Give, and Empathize.

 3. SAM App

 SAM won a Healthline “Best Apps Of The Year 2018” award. It lets users monitor their moods, get instant online help in times of need, and anonymously connect with other users.

 4. 7 Cups

The idea behind 7 Cups is simple – sometimes, all you need is a listening ear. The app enables users to chat with trained listeners for free. The app also contains mindfulness and meditation exercises. Finally, users can also use the app to find a professional help.

 5. Stress Relief & Management App

 This app includes dozens of inspiring, uplifting quotes that can provide a psychological boost in times of stress. Users can bookmark and share quotes with others on the platform

  6. Hellomind

 This app uses hypnosis to help users with common mental health problems including anxiety, phobias, and depression. It is simple to use – just select your problem from the menu, plug in some headphones, and relax.

 7. Moods

 Tracking your moods and psychological wellbeing is an empowering way to identify triggers. The Moods app makes this process straightforward. Just tap on the word tags that best fit your mood at that moment. You can then see how your emotions fluctuate day-to-day. There’s also an option to add your own notes or personalized mood tags.

 8. What’s Up?

 This app is designed to improve psychological wellbeing across your organization. Users can send an alert to the organization’s HR team if a colleague is in distress. They can also send and receive messages from the team if they need help coping with psychological difficulties. The app also has a mood diary function.

 9. Acupressure: Heal Yourself

Research supports acupressure as a therapy for stress relief, and this app allows users to treat themselves on the go. The app teaches users how to stimulate pressure points all over the body for quick stress relief.

Apps can be an effective, drug-free way to reduce stress within minutes. They allow workers to take charge of their wellbeing even on the busiest days. However, note that self-care also needs to be embedded in the organizational culture so that the burden to address anxiety and burnout does not fall on the shoulders of the individual worker.
