How Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador rebranded their organization and simplified their membership sign-up process using Adobe software

Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador (LNL) was founded in 2006 to promote literacy and learning in Newfoundland and Labrador. They provide a central place to find out about literacy programs with their Learn Line and website, and offer support and professional development for the organizations running literacy programs. Family literacy programLNL also works to promote an expanded view of literacy that includes essential skills such as computer use, thinking, working with others and document use.

Before hearing about TechSoup Canada, the only software at LNL was an old copy of Microsoft Office. So after getting a tip from a board member last fall, they quickly registered and ordered Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.

This was particularly exciting for Mark Young, LNL’s Communications Coordinator, who was in charge of updating the organization’s brand. Having used Adobe Photoshop in previous jobs, he knew that Microsoft Office would not be up to the task at hand. Mr. Young points out that “rebranding an established non-profit can be a daunting task, even with the right tools at hand. Without TechSoup Canada, we could have never accomplished this feat.”

LNL brand packageWith the help of Adobe Creative Suite, Mr. Young was able to design professional materials - from letterheads to business cards to forms. He also redesigned their information sheets on topics such as Family and Literacy in order to ensure that they were easy to read, attractive and professional.

More recently, Mr. Young has been updating LNL’s membership registration process, which used to involve new members fill out a paper form which they mailed, faxed or scanned and emailed to LNL. While these are still options, the new form is a PDF that people can fill out on their computers and submit by clicking a button. This saves time on both ends - for the person registering and for LNL.

Essential skillsUsed to the complexity of Photoshop, Mr. Young was pleasantly surprised to find how simple it was to create and distribute PDF forms with Adobe Acrobat Pro. He was able to create the PDF from a scan of their old paper form, and then share it through Acrobat’s tracking & distribution feature. This means that when new members submit their form, data is automatically stored in one place without any extra work required - and without the hassle of having to track down mailed, faxed and emailed responses.

What’s next? Since the population of Newfoundland and Labrador is so spread out, LNL wants to get better at making sure that their materials are available for anyone in the province. Mr. Young’s plan is to record the seminars and workshops that they hold and edit the video using the tools in Adobe Creative Suite Production Premium, so that good quality training can be accessible to anyone - regardless of distance, bad weather or any other factors.
